Sincerely speaking, I had never critically thought of the teaching of creationism in biology. This is because the teachers and books make it very clear that creationism was the first theory for our biological existence and that it has numerous flaws. They emphasize that this theory is no longer valid because it's foundations are in god and it was formulated in an epoch when science was very poor, there was little investigation and we were only beginning to give a profound thought about ourselves.
I think it is important to know past scientific theories, even if they are no longer valid. Nevertheless, it's teaching shouldn't be so extensive that one must know everything about it! In Portugal we only reference creationism a bit. In my biology manual, creationism is spoke of in only one page! From what I understand from that story, in England things are a lot different.
Interestingly, some days ago I read an article entitled "Was Darwin successful?" where it showed statistics about the acceptance of the Evolution Theory around the world. Impressing as it may sound, in britain, almost 40% of the population, if I can recall it correctly, was still convinced that each of the existing species was created by god. And we are this year celebrating the 150th birthday of the theory!!!
Creationism is the relligious bramch of the fixist theories for explaining biodiversity. It was acceptable until the 19th century or so but we know differently now. We know where they come from. There are dozens of arguments and proof for the validity of evolutionary theory, accounting for paleothology, biochemistry, genetics, embriology and much more. The fact that people are unaware of this is caused either by misinformation or fanatism. There is no reason nowadays to refuse evolutionism and no flaw whatsoever in it. It's like denying gravity. And it doesn't have to go against relligious beliefs. The two are not imcompatible and sending hate mail to a credited scientist is fanatism.
There are some nice YouTube channels that explain evolutionary theory and try to educate people and fight ignorance:

Unfortunately there are still lots of people who just cover their ears and refuse to believe. American republican , bible fanatics are an example.
i'm not very suprise by the faq of 40% of british population is still conviced that god created all the species, cause most people do not have the suficient education, and so they believe in what they learn form going to church. And i don't know why but the church still theach that god created everything
Yesterday I came across an interesting book about Darwin's Theory and some of the incorrect observations he states. I haven't done much research about it but I do find it really important to know your origins and incredibly amazing how far from animals we have come!

I guess it's just hard to believe for people who have believed in a god that created every single thing in the world since they were little children, which is a frequent case. Evolutionism is totally inconsistent with what they believe, and, of course, people don't approach it in a scientific way. It's easier for them to keep believing, especially when and where atheism/agnosticism/alternative religions are regarded as somewhat of a taboo (even though they're becoming a lot more accepted). So people just don't see evidence as actual evidence...
There's an interesting article about Darwin's dicoveries back on the HMS Beagle in this month's National Geographic.

I don't think that it is difficult to accept that you were not created by God. Maybe the problem is that the general public is too much connected with common sense and not with scientific proof. People say what people hear and people do. There are very few who search for scientific information when they have some kind of doubt and a great number of the population even rejects scientific conclusions without knowing or becoming aware that a scientific truth is subject to years of denial, confrontation and trial. Rarely something lives to the state of being scientifically proven without due scientific proof. Another problem is the fact that knowledge is not transmitted efficiently and with errors. With all this, how can we say that we have an effective education?
