That's quite funny. I wonder what the legal process would be to make sure he actually didn't sing again!. Would he still be able to profit from his existing recordings?
What other singers or performers would people be prepared to pay to make them disappear from the media?
- from the topic: James Blunt to quit music if paid enough

Note that when you write a new post, you can make it appear in two different categories if you want. So,for example, a topic might appear both in 'What's on in Porto' and 'Things to do at the Weekend'.

It's not just boys, either, according to this story in the Telegraph. Women soldiers are the norm now, and soldiers are beauty queens. But the issue I want to raise is, why are people surprised when guns are used to kill soldiers? Why the outcry, why the politician's speeches? Today we had this farce, which sounds like the screenplay for a bad film. On a more global scale we have laments, beating of chests and tearing of hair when soldiers are killed in situations like Afghanistan. But, isn't that what a soldier's job is? Isn't it clear to everyone that when someone joins the army, the job involves being ready to go into situations where your life will be on the line? Of course the death is a tragedy, not least because they could have chosen not to join the army. And it's a terrible loss for their families. But it should not be a surprise. Politicians should not pretend they didn't expect it. Give people guns, they will kill people. Join the army, you might get killed.

This section will have a topic each week which everyone should comment on. The issues raised here can (and even should) be controversial and provocative, but please, while you may of course be critical of views expressed or ideas held, do maintain a level of respect for other people and aim not to offend. I've started the ball rolling this week, but feel free to post your own stimulating topics each week. Only ONE topic each week, please! If someone else has already posted in any week, then please wait till the following week to post your topic. If nobody has posted a new topic by Friday night, then I will post a topic myself.

...and talking of Honda, instead of a choir doing the noise of a car, here's a car doing the noise of an orchestra. I won't embed this - go to the original webpage and watch the commercial - the sound and video quality is much better than what I found on YouTube.

That Pepsi ad is absolutely brilliant! Very nice.
What would the Portuguese version be? Standing on cans of Super Bock to get a can of Sagres?

Yes, that's right. Here's a link to the book on amazon.co.uk.

You should buy it with answers, as it's mainly for self-study.

To clear up the confusion, this is the book AC2.2 (CPE2) classes are using this year. AC2.1 (CPE1) classes are not using it. These classes will have an exam preparation book next year!

Buddhism is about being AWAKE. 'Buddha' means 'one who is awake'.
There's a very nice introduction to Zen Meditation here.

I'm very much hoping to stimulate some new discussion and exchange of opinion here on 'The Link' during session two. To get us going, I've changed the colour scheme of the forum, as some people said it was difficult to see menus and options on the old 'black on black' colour scheme.
Hope you like it!

Well that's what David Attenborough thinks. The ongoing debate between creationists and... evolutionists?
Read the story here. And comment.

Hmmm, not sure about jokes like that. Anyway, I think it'd already been made.

It might have been a mistake in retrospect. It certainly meant I had more chocolate muffins in one year than I ate during the rest of my life! More seriously, it seriously limited my social life, since the last train home was 2315, and after that it was expensive taxis. On the other hand, though, I had the beach at the end of my street on days off (it was there on other days, too, but I didn't always get to see it), and I met a lot of really great people on the train, a lot of them from Aveiro! I ended up at a great Carnival party in Aveiro through meeting someone on that train. Ah, but those were the days of the old trains... these new modern air-conditioned things don't encourage mingling the same way the old ones did...

This site
http://www.iftheworldcouldvote.com/ tries to gauge how the presidential election would turn out if the whole world
could vote. Well worth a look, and not least significant, in light of the above discussion, is the huge number of Portuguese people who have felt moved to vote! The site is run by three Icelandic guys (see FAQ on the site) who agree with Sylvester that the American election is for the American people to decide, but feel it is interesting to know the world's opinion about the candidates.
Have a look... and why not vote?
Thanks, Zepedro, for pointing this site out to me.

My McDonalds experiences are anything but American. When I used to live in Espinho, I often finished class at 10pm, but only had a train at 11.15pm. By the time I got to S Bento station, I had around 45 minutes to wait. Too much time to do nothing, but too little time to do anything much... except head for the local McDonalds for a chocolate muffin and a tea. I used to hang around on a table by myself, with a sad mixture of all the lonely people of that time of night on tables by themselves... It reminded me of a verse of 'Streets of London' by Ralph McTell. 'In the all night cafe at a quarter past eleven, same old man sitting there on his own, looking at the world over the rim of his teacup, each tea lasts an hour, and he wanders home alone...'

For something a little different, I thoroughly recommend the recently reopened Russian restaurant, Moscovo. Situated on the Gaia ribeira, just over the D.Luis bridge, this restaurant offers authentic Russian cuisine at an affordable price. I went there last weekend, and it came to 15 euros a head for soup, main course, and various extras, including vodka, beer, and desserts. Well worth trying.
